What is Inflammation?

  • Pain : This can happen continuously or only when a person touches the affected area.

  • Red : This happens due to an increase in blood supply to the capillaries in the area.

  • Loss of function : It may be difficult to move joints, breathe, sense odors, etc.

  • Swelling : Edema may develop if fluid builds up.

  • Heat : Increased blood flow can cause the affected area to become warm to the touch.

These signs are not always present. Sometimes Inflammation is "silent", without symptoms. A person may also feel tired, generally unwell, and have a fever.


Symptoms of acute Inflammation last several days. Subacute Inflammation lasts 2-6 weeks.


Chronic Inflammation


Chronic inflammation can continue for months or years. It has or may be associated with various diseases, such as:



  • Diabetes

  • cardiovascular disease (CVD)

  • arthritis and other joint diseases

  • allergy

  • chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

  • Psoriasis

  • rheumatoid arthritis


Symptoms will depend on the disease, but they can include pain and fatigue.


Measuring Inflammation


When there is Inflammation in the body, there are higher levels of substances called biomarkers.


An example of a biomarker is C-reactive protein (CRP). If your doctor wants to check for inflammation, he or she can evaluate your CRP level.


CRP levels tend to be higher in older adults and people with conditions like cancer and obesity. Even diet and exercise can make a difference.


Cause of Inflammation


Inflammation occurs when a physical factor triggers an immune response. Inflammation does not necessarily mean there is an infection, but an infection can cause Inflammation.


Acute Inflammation


Acute Inflammation can be caused by:



  • exposure to a substance, such as a bee sting or dust

  • an injury

  • infection


When the body detects damage or pathogens, the immune system triggers a number of responses:



  • The tissues accumulate plasma proteins, resulting in fluid accumulation leading to swelling.

  • The body releases neutrophils, a type of white blood cell, or white blood cells, that move toward the affected area. White blood cells contain molecules that can help fight pathogens.

  • Small blood vessels widen to make it easier for white blood cells and plasma proteins to reach the site of injury.

Signs of acute Inflammation may appear within hours or days, depending on the cause. In some cases, they can quickly become serious. How they develop and how long they last will depend on the cause, which part of the body they affect, and individual factors.


Some factors and infections that can lead to acute Inflammation include:



  • acute bronchitis, appendicitis and other diseases ending in “-itis”

  • Ingrown toenails

  • sore throat due to cold or flu

  • physical injury or injury


Chronic Inflammation


Chronic inflammation can develop if a person has:


Sensitivity : Inflammation occurs when the body senses something that shouldn't be there. Hypersensitivity to external agents can lead to allergic reactions.

  • a diet rich in unhealthy fats and added sugar

  • smoke

  • low sex hormones

  • emphasize

  • sleep problems


Long-term illnesses that doctors associate with Inflammation include:



  • asthma

  • chronic peptic ulcer

  • tuberculosis

  • rheumatoid arthritis

  • periodontitis

  • ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease

  • Sinusitis

  • active hepatitis


Inflammation plays an important role in healing, but chronic Inflammation can increase the risk of various diseases, including certain cancers, rheumatoid arthritis, atherosclerosis, periodontitis and hay fever.
