Audio files awareness and listening continues to increase in the United States, fueled by a boom in new podcast programming, the pandemic, and consumer acceptance of “ smart speaker ” as Amazon Echo and Google Home devices.
2021 podcast statistics from Edison Research and Triton Digital was recently released as part of the annual study: The Infinite Dial.

78% of Americans are now familiar with Podcasting
This is about 222 million people and an increase of 10 million in a year – 4.72% increase.
57% of Americans have listened to Podcasts
This is a result from 55% in 2020 and 51% in 2019. This indicates that about 3/4 of people familiar with podcasts have actually listened to a podcast.
Podcast listeners have grown 29.5% in 3 years
In 2018, 44% of Americans 12 and older listened to podcasts, compared with 57% in 2021.
41% of Americans listen to Podcasts every month
In 2021, 116 million monthly podcast listeners.
Monthly Podcast Listeners Grow 61.5% in 3 Years
In 2018, 26% of Americans 12 or more listened to a monthly podcast, compared with 41% in 2021.
More than half of Americans aged 12 – 34 listen to Podcasts every month
As of 2021, 56% of all Americans, 12 – 34, listen to at least one podcast per month, compared with 49% of me N 2020.
Fastest-growing monthly podcasts among older Americans
Between 2020 and 2021, the percentage of Americans age 55 + monthly podcast listeners increases to 18%. Currently, more than a quarter of the total 55+ consumers in the US are listening to podcasts every month.
More Americans Listen to Podcasts Every Week Than Have a Netflix Account
In 2021, 28% or 80 million Americans are weekly podcast listeners. There are now 10 million more weekly podcast listeners than 69 million won Netflix account owners in the US. This could indicate the beginning of the transition from video to audio media.
Weekly Podcast Listeners Adjust an average of 8 Podcasts per week
On average, podcast fans listen to 8 podcasts over the course of a week. However, this average is somewhat skewed by loyal podcasters. 40% of weekly podcast listeners consume 1-3 podcasts per week, but 19% listen to 11 or more podcasts! Overall, more listeners are listening to more podcasts per week than in 2020 where 51% of listeners only listen to 1-3 podcasts per week.
Nearly a quarter of Americans now have “Smart Speakers” in their homes
Led by Amazon, the growth in smart speaker ownership has been substantial. Total smart speaker ownership has grown by 22% between and 2021. This increase in smart speaker numbers is giving owners more opportunities to listen to podcasts at home. As the pandemic continues, sales of home entertainment devices like smart speakers have increased year over year.
Podcasting has become a powerful form of media in the United States with a growing audience of all ages. groups and diversity of listeners also increased. Listeners are also consuming more podcasts than ever possible due to the need for home entertainment during the pandemic. However, podcasts have become an important part of media today.
