Google Launches New PageSpeed Insights

Google announced A few weeks ago there was a new PageSpeed Insights upgrade, and that upgrade is rolling out to everyone now. Addy Osmani from Google said This upgrade makes the tool “more intuitive” when it comes to measuring performance and improves the use of lab and real-world data.

The PageSpeed Insights tool. The PageSpeed Insights tool analyzes the content of a web page, then generates recommendations to make it faster. Google has upgraded the tool in 2018 to use real-world field data from the Chrome browser.

A new location. Google has moved this tool to https://pagespeed.web.dev/ – it was formerly located at https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights/

What's new. Google says the user interface is more intuitive "by clearly distinguishing between data obtained from the aggregate environment and data collected from users in the field". Google has now established dedicated sections for lab data versus field data in the tool. The labels for “Field data” and “Laboratory data” have been replaced with text that shows what the data means and how it can help. Google also moved the field data section to the top.

Google also has Core Web Vitals assessment results, which previously appeared as a single word “pass” or “fail” in Field Data. This helps it stand out as a separate subsection with a separate icon.

Google has changed the navigation menu at the top and includes links for mobile and desktop to the center of the report page. The links are now more numerous and "clearly indicate the platform on which the data is being displayed," the company said.

Here are the before and after screenshots:

The PageSpeed Insight Origin Summary has been moved to appear on the checkbox's clock. Google said moved this report section to a new tab. The Origin Summary provides an aggregated CrUX score for all pages from the origin.

The PageSpeed Insights report now includes a new information section at the bottom of each field, and a lab card that shares the following details about the sampled data:

  • Data collection period

  • Access duration

  • Equipment

  • Network connections

  • Sample size

  • Chrome version

There is a new “Expand View” feature that adds a detailed view to the field data section and allows you to see details specific to Core Web Vitals metrics.

The page screenshot has been removed and now images and page thumbnails showing the loading sequence will be available in the lab data section.

Google also changes some of its measurements for different metrics.

Why do we care. If you are obsessed with speed or want to make your Page Experience and Core Web Vital scores as high as possible, you can use PageSpeed Insights to do that. Review changes Google made this tool to see what more you can get out of this tool that you didn't have before.
