AirPods Pro's new 3A283 firmware now supports Spatial Audio

Although the iPhone 12 is delayed at least until October, iOS 14 will still be released to users. And in the meantime, Apple is tweaking their software in preparation for upcoming features.

Recently, Apple has launched a new firmware version bearing the serial number 3A283 for my line of wireless headphones. Both the AirPods 2 and the AirPods Pro are updated to this version, and thanks to the reports on Twitter, we can already see what features this version offers, it looks like both Spatial Audio and automatic switching are all supported in AirPods Pro.

One user on the forum MacRumors share that:

I just tried the Spatial Audio feature on my iPad. It is very great! It feels like it’s coming from iPad‌, so real that I actually thought the sound was coming from ‌iPad‌’s speakers at first. Had to take the AirPod out of my ear to know that I actually heard it from my ‌AirPods‌. I really want to know how Apple can bring this magical feeling.

This feature is currently only supported when you watch content on Apple TV +. So if you’re trying out iOS 14 or iPadOS 14, have updated your AirPods Pro to the latest firmware, you can try these features out now.

What is Spatial Audio and automatic conversion?

Spatial Audio (or Spatial Sound) is one of the great new features of the AirPods Pro. Apple says it brings “cinema sound” to its wireless headphones. This feature relies on head movements to deliver a immersive audio experience when viewing content. All the frequency tuners and directional filters work together for a immersive experience.

Meanwhile, the auto-converting feature is pretty simple, but the way it works is great. With this feature, your AirPods can automatically switch seamlessly between Apple devices, depending on which device you’re using. For example, if you just ended the call on your iPhone and then opened an episode on your iPad to watch, the AirPods will automatically switch the audio output to match.

Spatial Audio will only appear on the AirPods Pro, but the automatic switching will be available on both AirPods 2 and Pro versions.
